What are you passionate about? Maybe it’s live show reviews. Maybe it’s cars. Maybe it’s changes in journalism. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something you’ll be able to engage with for 15 weeks, and something that will give you a depth of material during that time as well.

Why? Because you’re going to start a blog dedicated to that subject.

Why a single subject? For two reasons: One, it’s good to get a feel for blogging a beat–a defined area of interest and expertise. Not only does it allow you to specialize, it also increases the chances that people will find you via Google. Both good things. And two, because you’re learning a rhythm with blogging. It’s easier to learn that rhythm (and experiment within it) when you’re not constantly wondering “what do I blog about now?” If you have a subject, then it’s just a matter of fleshing it out.

So: Choose a subject and set up a single-subject blog (subject of your choosing) using one of of these two blogging platforms:

WordPress–better for a more advanced user.
Tumblr–perfect if you’re a beginner.

Please post a link to your blog, along with a one-paragraph description of what the theme is and your approach to that theme.

  1. My blog: nerdlypress.wordpress.com

My blog is all about geek culture. This includes news and discussions about anime (Japanese animation), comic books, web comics, tech news and cool gadgets and accessories I’m obsessing over at the moment. My blog will have a ton of pictures of certain gadgets or images linking to interesting subjects about geek culture. I will also include upcoming conventions and geek-related events coming up in the U.S.

  2. I made a blog for both wordpress and Tumblr…
    Didn’t like wordpress–sticking with Tumblr.

My blog is about Revolution. Not Revolution as it’s known throughout America, though. A Revolution doesn’t have to be political (as history shows us), nor technological (think Chevy car products). It can be in the mind. It can be cultural. It can be spiritual. By combining all of it, we can have some massive, much-needed change… Change will come through my writings about how to Know Thyself, along with videos of me doing Revolutionary activities. It will be more humor-centered and inspirational than political hate-speech and negative musings about how fucked everything is. We know it’s fucked. No one needs to emphasize this. We need to show people how to end fear without the use of pills…

Also posting: things that are funny (can’t have a Revolution without humor) and amazing, Revolutionary music, etc.

  3. My blog: http://aprilmb.tumblr.com/

Three months ago, I was told by doctors that I have an autoimmune disease called Alopecia Totalis, where I have lost almost all my hair and I have Celiac disease (wheat/gluten allergy). I wanted to make a blog devoted to my sickness. As a young woman with no hair, having to wear a wig, having to deal with this disorder everyday-it’s hard to say the least and I am not the only one. I want it to be an awareness/help service. I have accepted what I have and want to make other women/or men KNOW that they are beautiful with our without their hair. So, my blog will have things such as: about Alopecia, about Celiac disease, wig information, diets for people living with Celiac etc. and more. It’s a hard subject to come out about by doing so, I hope to help not only others but also myself.
    Hair is soo overrated 🙂

  4. Here is my blog http://yariosborne.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/hello-world/

First although my given name is Wendy, I go by Yari, hence Yari Osborne. My blog is about social, political and civil issues. I won’t use this blog to report news. Instead, I’d like to express my feelings about certain things. Most of it will be about civil and social ills or injustices, or about political matters that I feel need to be addressed. I want to evoke change, starting with helping people to overcome oppression, injustice, and violation of civil rights, and I hope that this blog can contribute even in a small way towards that.

    • My blog: http://fitwithyari.wordpress.com/

Hi, I changed the subject of my blog to weight-loss and fitness. I am on my own weight-loss and fitness journey, and my blog will follow my progress through diet and exercise, and I hope to really capture the challenges that I will inevitably face. But this is more than just me. I want to post tips, insights and ideas along the way for others who are working on losing weight and getting fit. So I’ll post pictures, share recipes and workouts. I really want to help others do something that can be challenging and frustrating.

  5. Here’s my blog http://just4dogs.tumblr.com/

I did my blog on animals with dogs in particular. I chose this subject because I feel like along with writing, I was chosen to help animals in need. It’s in my nature to help animals. In the future I hope to open up a dog shelter/ store. In my blog, I will be discussing everything dealing with dogs from dog foods that are good and bad, how to care for dogs in the winter, grooming and care and also just the trial and tribulations that I go through with my dogs. My family owns 4 pit bulls and two of them I claim as my own. Overall, I think this will be fun already knowing that I go through a lot with my animals. I’m already trying to break them from chewing on everything in sight.

I don’t know anything about planning a wedding or the details that go into it. I am already working with a short amount of time AND school/graduation. So my blog will be about my progress and I will be posting nice videos, photos, ideas of weddings and brides and bride stories as well as some bizarre/humorous ones.

  8. Basically for my blog, I wanted to dabble in all sides of the art world: fashion, music, live shows, theater…all of it. I want to be able to not only review but give deeper insight to the entire spectrum. Art is a lot more than what people make it sometimes.

That’s the gist of it–I put an introduction on the blog itself also.

  9. My blog is called Armed With Corkscrew and will chronicle my journey to become knowledgable about the fascinating world of wine. I will detail the basic information that would help any one take the steps towards becoming a Wine Afficianado. I love food also and will be including recipes for appetizers that I find go well with a certain wine.

  11. Hi, I have decided to change the subject of my blog. Instead my blog will be about health and fitness. It is called Fit With Yari. I am on my own personal journey to lose weight and get fit and healthy. It is a challenging road, filled with highs and lows, achievement and disappointment, so my blog will be about sharing that.

However, it goes beyond me. I want to offer a resource of tips, idea, insights and direction for others who are working at losing weight, working out, eating healthy, and getting fit. Recipe ideas, meal plans, counting calories, workout tips, nutrition help, etc, as well as photos and videos along the way!!

  13. My blog is about global peace and security. Global peace today is needed more than ever. The topic covers the United States approach towards ongoing pro-democracy movements and freedom struggles around the world, particularly in Middle East and Asia.
The U.S. foreign policy determines the course of global peace and security. Political crisis in Egypt is an example. U.S. supported Egyptian dictator Hosni Mobarak for 30 years and ignored people who wanted him to go through free and fair elections. But even then, Egyptian people today are looking towards the U.S. to help them get rid of the dictator whom Washington supported for three decades.

  15. My blog is fairly casual, potentially self-reflective documentation of my journey going back to school as an adult after being in the workforce for 5+ years. Most of it comes from the vastly different perspective I have now in regard to my education and how I handle myself, my workload, and interact with peers and teachers.

Thinkingcapsandsmarterpants.wordpress.com is relatively self-explanatory. Thinking Caps. And, instead of Smarty Pants, SmartER Pants. Being older and wiser, for me, made all the difference. And I’ve found that with the economy in a less-than-stellar place, more and more of my friends are going back to school. I want to provide a place for them to comment, agree, disagree, share stories, realizations, etc… as a self-moderating or motivational space for adult students. No matter whether it’s undergrad, grad school, law school, med school. There are similarities between all of it.
